My Story

The difference between these impressions of my personality wasn’t my age or experience (although experience and expertise were important). It was the audience and message. The ability to tell the right story using the right words to the right people turned my natural inclination to talk from a negative to a positive.

But in business, something was missing.

Leaving graduate school, I became a visiting professor and started a consulting company for sport coaching education. My company was approved to be a certification for youth sport coaches for a state parks and recreational association.

Fast forward 12 years, I was a tenured professor and owned a successful swim club. I thought content …

Through the course of a year, my wife and I felt called to focus on our family. I enjoyed coaching (I am still a professor), but the hours away from home meant less time with my children. As we all know, time with our children is short. Swimming had to go, and I needed a new venture. But the wounds from my consulting work were still present. My prayer was that I could do something that used the skills I already had in a new way and for others. The answer came from my wife and former athlete.

Once we were certain of God’s leading, my wife sent me a list of careers that I might like to pursue. Like a “good” husband, I looked over the list without giving it much thought (just wait, this gets good).

Instead, I did my own research and found a former athlete who pointed me to copywriting.

I could combine qualitative analysis, storytelling and all the skills learned throughout my life. Suddenly I saw the missing links to success in my consulting venture and how to help others succeed in their pursuits. I excitedly told my wife who plainly (maybe painfully) said, “That was number one on the list I gave you!” Confirmation.

After completing the rigorous coursework, I learned how to combine my love of writing and storytelling with time-tested strategies to help innovative businesses and entrepreneurs succeed. I wanted to make a difference in their lives and keep them from the pain I felt in my first venture as a business owner. This happens through words that sell. The bonus is that in doing so, I have more time with my family to pursue our goals as a family and Christ followers. It’s a win—win!

So, here I am …

  • I wrote a website and sent out notices with little reply.
  • I gave a presentation at their conference, which as enthusiastically accepted, but did not yield appointments.
  • I was putting my words and ideas in front of so many directors and league officials without securing but one appointment, which was canceled.

I was frustrated that so much effort to create the program ended without building the business.

and then God stepped in and changed the direction of my life.

As a professor, these skills helped me connect with my students, teach them valuable information , and hopefully make classes more enjoyable.

As a writer
, I learned how to formulate my ideas that helped others understand my research clearly and concisely.

As a speaker
, I presented throughout the U.S. and the world (on five continents). I had skills and knowledge to speak on varying topics.

It was perfect!
